Vice President - Merchandising

Purpose:The Vice President, Merchandising is responsible for leading Omni channel strategic direction (focus is on 1---3 years out) for sales, EBITDA, profitability trends, market growth and merchandising programs. This includes ensuring the successful execution by Merchandising Directors, department business initiatives, programs, plans and meeting or exceeding financial targets. (If programs are not executing to plan or financial targets are not being met, this role is responsible for leading efforts to make adjustments and ensure that plans and financials get on track). The role has direct responsibility for all center store and fresh departments. This role collaborates with the head of digital, marketing, and operations at CUB and the UNFI merchandising team to lay out the strategic direction and to ensure the business plans reflect local, regional and industry knowledge and drive sales. Ensures compliance with all industry, corporate and government regulations. Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:Planning
Responsibilities: Ensures input and local insight into the Category Business Plan aligned to the Brand direction is shared with leadership. Identifies local opportunities. Formulates financial commitments and manages the forecasts of the commitment. Approves new go-to-market strategies. Oversees the review of local competitive relevance activity and sets local strategies across categories and/or departments. Redirects Sales and EBITDA plans when financial targets and business plans change or are not met.Ad/Promo
Responsibilities: Works with and provides guidance and direction to marketing to be aligned with banner goals. Supervises and ensures that the promo activities meet the go-to-market strategies. Directs the execution of the promo strategy to ensure alignment with other related strategies. Achieves agreed upon goals on promotional effectiveness.Assortment and Presentation
Responsibilities: Ensures Merchandising Directors appropriately execute assortment and presentation plans and have the right products in the right stores. Works closely with Real Estate and Store Development teams in planning and execution related to all new, remodeled, and existing layouts to ensure local needs are met. Ensures product mix is competitive within each store s trade area.Pricing
Responsibilities: Approves/executes pricing strategies and decisions. Ensures pricing strategies and initiatives are competitive in the market to achieve financial goals. Works with executive team on defining and executing pricing strategy aligned with Brand proposition.Budget/P&L
Responsibilities: Primary responsibility to the total P&L for the Merchandising functions of those areas of direct responsibility. Shared responsibility for the overall Banner P&L.Managerial
Responsibilities: Leads, coaches and develops Merchandising Directors/ManagersScope:Number of Associates Supervised: Directly: 4 Merchandising Directors (specifically center store, meat, produce and deli/bakery), Indirectly: 15-20 managers, assistants, and department specialists.Role does not have a direct responsibility for Cub Pharmacy, Marketing, or eCommerce.Job Requirements:Relevant Experience, Education, Certification, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Bachelor s degree preferred. A minimum of 10 years retail buying and merchandising responsibilities and experience in center store as well as fresh department required.In-depth understanding of store operations and merchandising methodologies and practices (P&L, financial management, etc.). Greater depth of specific category expertise may be required on a case-by-case basis.Analytical Skills: Strong knowledge base in supermarket retail and an understanding of consumer behavior in relation to product performance; must carry a detailed understanding of cause-effect relations between operational levers and performance (assortment/price vs. volume/margins) by utilizing financial, statistical, merchandising, marketing, and/or consumer research background. Strong financial background.Interpersonal Skills: Proven ability to work successfully across all areas of the company; can successfully monitor performance; strong client management skills, particularly working with vendors; ability to influence and lead effective partnerships with the banners; can thrive in a complicated matrix environment.Innovation: Champions new ideas and initiatives and creates an environment that supports innovation; leverages fresh perspectives, breakthrough ideas, and new paradigms to create value in the market.Negotiation Skills: Demonstrates ability to negotiate contracts and terms in order to gain maximum advantage for costs and vendor funding opportunities. Technical Skills: Well developed computer aptitude with proficient skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office; ability to adapt to and learn new systems quickly.Physical Environment: Some work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. Incumbent may stand for long periods of time. Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday. Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties. Must be available to work flexible or unusual hours as needed, including weekends.
